Wild Women I: Hackney

THE STORY DETAILS:

What: Wild Women Part I: Hackney

When: 10th January 2023

Where: Soif Studios - The Cove, Darnley Road, Hackney

…and we’re off! The first Wild Women workshop was a total joy! I was joined by 7 magnificent photographers for a day of creativity and co-working…

The idea behind the first workshop was experimentation - with our cameras, with our editing, and (for me!) in organising events like this!

I am delighted that the seven photographers who joined me - Rachel, Emily, Kate, Rachel, Charlotte, Laura and Sophie - came along with open hearts and minds, and really got stuck into some creating with each other. You can meet them below, and see their work dotted through this blog post. We started a very rainy and cold January day with cups of steaming hot tea and coffee in Popham’s Bakery, getting to know each other and comparing toddler tantrum stories! We then moved to the studio and spent some time exploring the space and the light, taking portraits and playing with Rachel’s cute baby daughter! Prior to the workshop, everyone had completed a short questionnaire about the kit they use, technical things they wanted to work on and areas of their business they wished to talk about. It meant I was able to pair people up to work on similar things or be guided on

Over lunch, everyone had the opportunity to talk about their businesses and any challenges they were experiencing. We could compare notes on social media planning, educational opportunities and upcoming shoots and editing. It was a wonderfully relaxed and open atmosphere, and great to talk about the career changes or business pivots that some people are currently going through.

After lunch, in the last of the January afternoon light, we all photographed Sophie playing and dancing in a tulle dress Rachel P had brought along. There was lots of experimenting going on - double exposures, using prisms and fairy lights to create effects, and playing with fast/slow shutter speeds - and it was such a fun way to end the session! I have loved seeing all the different interpretations and edits of the same moment when everyone shared their galleries after the event - you can see examples of everyone’s work below and pick your faves!

“ [Wild Women part 1] … was simply glorious. I loved how Amy took such an interest in all of us as people, as business owners and as women and mothers. She really fosters and encourages a real sense of connection and community. You can feel the passion and hard work that Amy puts into the Wild Women events and they are a perfect balance of structure and free creative space. Would highly recommend (and have!) to anyone starting out or well established in photography” - Charlotte
